The course is a four-year UGC recognized degree course. The course includes 1 year of clinical training. The clinical training provides the candidates an opportunity to learn before they enter the industry.

The course includes training the candidates in soft skills and English language.
Eligibility for the course and admission
The candidates need a minimum of 40% marks in the 12th science in physics, chemistry, biology and/or mathematics.
For the reservation category the candidate requires a minimum of 35% marks in the PCB or PCBM.
Eligibility for admission to second year (Lateral entry)
The candidates need to complete two years of academic study and one year of clinical internship after completing diploma in optometry. The course should be recognized by the university.
For admission the candidates need to apply. This can be done online too. The candidates are called for an entrance exam. Next the candidates have to appear for a personal interview. This is done as per the guidelines given by DMER.

As there is a huge demand for trained optometrist the job prospects for them are good. They can make careers at private consultancy practice, private business practice, optical showroom, professional service in the corporate sector, eye hospital, eye clinic and more.
The profession also covers fitting, manufacturing and supply of spectacles and contact lenses and other optical aids.
